History

The Cape's most luxurious destination since 1914.

Through the Years

The Cape’s most luxurious destination since 1914, Chatham Bars Inn has long set the standard for coastal elegance. From its early days—offering innovative amenities unlike any other on Cape Cod—to its modern-day distinction following a transformative renovation, the Inn continues to earn recognition as one of the world’s premier destinations. As a family-owned property, its mission remains unchanged: to deliver an exceptional, world-class experience for every guest.

From Hunting Lodge To Luxury Lodging

Founded in 1914 by Charles Hardy, Chatham Bars Inn began as an elegant hunting lodge for New England’s elite. Set along Aunt Lydia’s Cove, it quickly became a refined coastal retreat, blending natural beauty with modern comforts. After Hardy’s passing in 1929, the Inn’s legacy continued, solidifying its place as one of Cape Cod’s most iconic destinations.

A Home Away From Home

By the 1940s, Chatham Bars Inn had established itself as a family-friendly luxury destination on Cape Cod, welcoming both distinguished guests and returning families alike. Notable visitors included Henry Ford, William Rockefeller, and members of European royalty, with Princess Juliana of the Netherlands residing at the Inn during World War II. Through decades of change and evolving ownership, the Inn remained a cherished summer tradition—where generations returned year after year to experience the timeless charm of the Cape.

Modern Rejuvenation

Acquired in 2006, Chatham Bars Inn underwent a transformative renovation that redefined it as a world-class luxury resort while preserving its historic charm. Guest rooms, cottages, and public spaces were thoughtfully reimagined with modern comforts, ushering in a new era of coastal elegance. Today, the Inn continues to earn global recognition, reaffirming its place as a leading destination on Cape Cod and beyond.

The Chatham Bars Inn Farm

Rooted in a legacy dating back to 1914, Chatham Bars Inn Farm continues a long-standing commitment to fresh, seasonal cuisine. Reestablished with the purchase of a nearby farm, the Inn now sources much of its produce directly from its own fields, bringing true farm-to-table dining to life. From signature restaurants to seasonal experiences, this dedication to local ingredients has helped shape Chatham Bars Inn into one of Cape Cod’s most celebrated culinary destinations.

The Standard Of Luxury On Cape Cod

Since its debut in 1914, Chatham Bars Inn has set itself apart as an elevated destination on Cape Cod. While the world has evolved, the Inn has remained constant in its commitment to refinement, elegance, and exceptional service. More than a century later, it continues to define the standard of luxury on the Cape—consistently exceeding expectations with every stay.

A legacy of excellence, continually redefining luxury on Cape Cod.
